What’s kaimaki futon?
Kaimaki futon originated in Edo period (1603 – 1868) when there was not enough heating appliances and the temperature in a room in winter was very cold. Because kaimaki futon has the kimono-shape and it was made to fit human’s body, it can keep the heat coming out from our body very efficiently. In the northern part of Japan, people used to wear it not only when sleeping, but also when they do house keeping. The belt (obi) was necessary for it.
