Kakishibu Dyeing

Kakishibu is a traditional Japanese dye made from the fermented juice of unripe persimmons. It has long been used to color and finish fabrics, paper, and wood.

One of the distinctive characteristics of Kakishibu is that the color continues to change with light and time. Exposure to sunlight gradually deepens the tone, so each piece develops its own appearance as it is used.

Because this is a natural dye, a slight Kakishibu scent may remain when the item is new. The scent gradually fades with airing and use.

Subtle variations in color and unevenness are part of the character of the hand-dyeing process.

Handwoven Ramie and Natural Dyeing

This handwoven ramie fabric is dyed by hand in Japan using Kakishibu made from persimmons grown in the Minamiyamashiro region of Kyoto.

  • Dark Brown - Tetsubai
Kakishibu fabric treated with an iron mordant, creating a darker brown to near-black color.
  • Brown - Kakishibu
Warm brown tones that gradually deepen with light and air.
  • Red Brown - Tamashibu
A brighter reddish-brown Kakishibu finish with a slight sheen and firmer feel.
  • Undyed - Natural Color
Natural handwoven ramie with no added dye.

How to Put on the Cover

To make it easier to insert the Zabuton into the cover, wrap the cushion loosely in a thin plastic sheet first. The plastic helps reduce friction between the Zabuton and the cover.

  1. Wrap the Zabuton in a plastic sheet.
  2. Slide the wrapped Zabuton into the cover.
  3. Once the Zabuton is fully inside, gently pull the plastic sheet out.
  4. Adjust the corners and shape the cushion before closing the zipper.

The plastic sheet is used only during insertion and should be removed afterward.
