ABOUT

About Us

Futon has long been part of everyday life in Japan.

Not a luxury item or a trend, but something simple, practical, and meant to be used and slept on.

At Futon Tokyo, we continue this approach — making futons by hand, with care, and with respect for the materials.

Our Story

Our workshop is located in Koto-ku, Tokyo. For over 70 years in the same place, we have been making futons as part of ordinary Japanese life.

The company itself was founded in 1871. Through wars, lifestyle changes, and the spread of Western-style beds, futons gradually disappeared from many homes. Still, we continued making them.

Because for us, futons are not nostalgic objects. They are practical tools for daily life.

Across generations, the essential work has remained the same: preparing cotton, layering it carefully, and making futons for everyday use.

Why Futon, Today

Many people today are becoming more thoughtful about what they live with, and what they sleep on.

Futons are made with natural materials and a simple structure. This creates a sleeping environment that is breathable, adaptable, and easy to live with.

They do not rely on complex systems. With regular airing and seasonal adjustment, they can be used comfortably for many years.

For us, this way of sleeping still makes sense today.

How Our Futons Are Made

Each futon begins with carefully selected cotton.

The fibers are opened, layered, and adjusted by hand to create balanced support and breathability.

This process relies on the experience of futon craftsmen and the natural character of the cotton itself.

Materials

We work mainly with natural materials — cotton for its breathability, traditional fabrics chosen for durability and feel, and tatami designed to support both the body and the futon.

In Japan, where the seasons change clearly throughout the year, people have long developed ways of living with natural materials.

While cotton is no longer widely grown in Japan, we travel to India ourselves to select high-quality cotton suitable for traditional futon making, working directly with trusted sources.

Other materials we use — such as tatami, buckwheat hulls, and hinoki wood — come from Japan and reflect long traditions of local craftsmanship.

Each material is chosen for how it works in daily use — breathability, durability, and comfort over time.

We draw on this tradition and practical knowledge, using materials and techniques that have been refined through long use.

More details about our materials and making process can be found on our Materials page.

For International Customers

Each futon is carefully prepared for its journey from Japan.

Because our futons are made to order, each piece is completed individually and packed by hand before shipment. We take great care in preparing every order so that it arrives safely.

Many of our international customers are pleasantly surprised by the care taken in the packaging. We also provide tracking information so that shipments can be followed along the way.

We approach packaging in much the same way we approach making our futons — with attention, care, and respect for the materials.

Looking Ahead

Futons have long been part of everyday life in Japan.

We simply continue making them — carefully, and one by one.

For homes, for daily life, and now for many places around the world.
