What are “Asanoha” and “Sashiko” ?
In old times, Asanoha (flax leaf) was considered to be sacred and talismanic. When babies were born, the people back then used to make clothes with this pattern and put them on the babies wishing their health. This pattern is consist of triangles and one of the most beautiful geometric pattern of Japan. Still now, you can find this pattern in kimonos, furniture and modern architecture in Japan.
“Sashiko” embroidery originated in northern Japan about more than 400 years ago. It was a folk wisdom used in poor, cold villages to make their precious kimono fabric tough and to keep them as warm as possible. In modern times, sashiko is enjoyed as a fun hand craft.
