Hinoki, Japanese cypress has a fresh coniferous woody scent.

Depending on the environment, the smell of hinoki will gradually diminish.
If you wish to prolong the smell of hinoki, please purchase hinoki oil or additional chips (sold separately).

The moderate firmness provided by the cypress wood chips gives a comfortable feeling as if you are having a head massage.

Hinoki chips (cubes) are expected to have natural humidity control, deodorizing, and insect control effects.
These tips are rounded off at the corners using a special manufacturing process and look lovely.

Hinoki contains cypress oil. The component of the cypress oil is said to have the effect of making the parasympathetic nervous system dominant. Hinoki has a refreshing woody aroma as if you are taking a forest bath.

Data show that alpha-pinene, the main component of this fragrance, makes the parasympathetic nervous system dominant. Thus, it calms the mind and relaxes the body, which can be expected to have a high sleep effect.

In particular, hinoki from Kochi contains more alpha-pinene than other regions.

Certified Organic Cotton

Organic cotton, the raw material used for the filling, is grown by the bioRe Project(*1), a social project in India, and is grown organically, without the use of pesticides or chemical fertilizers.

This project not only reduces environmental impact but also ensures socially fair production. In addition, it has been inspected and certified by a third-party certification organization based on strict standards that cover everything from the fields to the spinning process.

Also, we at Futon Tokyo do not use any chemicals in the process of turning raw cotton into cotton filling. The safety of our work process is certified by OEKO-TEX(*2). This certification is given only to products that have passed the world's strictest inspection standards and are recognized as safe. The most strict of these requirements, Class 1, was obtained in 2023.

The bioRe Project (*1)

The bioRe project was initiated by the Swiss company Remei in India in 1991 and in Tanzania in 1994. It is a social project initiated for sustainable organic cotton production. The project is not just about buying cotton from the farmers, but also about making products that are environmentally friendly and socially fair in all processes, from training in organic farming to the final product, so that the people living in this region can become self-reliant.

The project's activities are also multifaceted, including education for children, infrastructure development for medical care and water sources, financial assistance for farmers, and support for women to become self-reliant. It is known as one of the largest and most advanced projects of its kind in the world.

In 2002, in recognition of these achievements, the United Nations awarded this project the "Sustainable Development Partnership Award" at the 2nd World Environment Summit held in Johannesburg, the capital of the Republic of South Africa.

OEKO-TEX® (*2)

We are the first in Japan to receive a certification from OEKO-TEX in the futon manufacturing field. This certificate expresses our craftsmanship and commitment to safety.

OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 is the world's highest level of certification for safe textile products, which is only given to products that have passed strict analytical tests covering more than 350 hazardous chemical substances.  It is a globally recognized safety standard in the textile business that goes far beyond Japanese safety standards, including certification of sustainable factories that take into consideration the impact on the people involved in production and the environment.
Since its inception in 1992, OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 certification has been awarded more than 200,000 times, and demand for this certification continues to grow worldwide.

< How to care >

Hinoki pillows can be used for a long time with regular care.

Although the pillows cannot be washed in water, the natural insecticide and antibacterial properties of hinoki make them very easy to care for.

-. Pillow sleeve and pillowcases are washable, however, the wood cubes cannot be washed in water.

-. It is highly recommended to remove the pillow sleeve  or case from the hinoki wood cubes and air dry it in the shade for one full day in a well-ventilated place. Turning the pillow over periodically will allow the moisture absorbed by the chips to be fully released. (You can also dry them in the sun for short periods of time). A good rule of thumb is to do this once or twice a week in the summer and once or twice a month in the winter.

-. Wood cubes should not be washed in water. It will accelerate deterioration. Also, the essential oil, which is the source of the fragrance, will be lost. The natural ingredients contained in hinoki allow for hygienic use.

-. For long-term storage, it is recommended that the product be stored in a cool, dark, and airtight place.

< Caution in use >

-. Because hinoki is a natural material, the essential oil components of hinoki may seep through to the surface when exposed to direct sunlight or placed in high room temperatures.

-.  The essential oil that is the source of the fragrance is gradually released.
Even if the scent is no longer felt from the hinoki pillow, the effect of the essential oil is still being released. If you wish to enjoy the fragrance for a longer period of time, please add natural hinoki oil. Since the natural oil has a strong fragrance, 2 to 3 drops per application is sufficient. After applying the oil, rub it well and blend it into the pillow.

-.  Hinoki wood may discolor or chip over time. Such cubes should be removed and disposed of as combustible waste. Additional filling (sold separately) can be replenished for a fresh hinoki pillow.

< About place of manufacture >

Although Kochi Prefecture has an image of seas and rivers, it is one of the most forested prefectures in Japan, with 84% of its land area covered by forests.
This abundance of forests nurtures the clear streams of the Shimanto and Niyodo Rivers, and produces a rich natural environment and its bounty.
