It is an ancient wooden pillow with a small pillow attached on it. This pillow was used by samurai wearing the topknot or maiko having the ancient Japanese updo hairstyles to keep their hairstyles while sleeping. This makura is no longer used today, however, the sentence “taka-makura de neru” is used for the meaning of “to be able to sleep without any worries.”
