Shima

It is a striped pattern for fabrics. There are a variety of striped patterns such as tate-jima (horizontal stripes), yoko-jima (vertical stripes), koshi-jima (checked patterns) and naname-jima (diagonal stripes). Although there were traditional striped woven fabrics called ‘shizuri’ or ‘sujiori’ in Japan, they began to be called ‘shima’ since the Edo period.
