It means old cotton separated from outer materials of a futon. In the past, there was a custom to separate cotton batting from a futon’s outer materials during the late spring and early summer to take the cotton to a futon shop for uchi-naoshi service during the summer. The cotton which completed the uchi-naoshi service was wrapped with paper and delivered to each customer’s home.
