It is one of the manufacturing processes, in which the raw cotton is turned into the finished goods such as the cotton batting of futons or cotton yarns.

In this process, the impurities such as seeds are removed from the freshly-harvested cotton first and then the cotton mass is loosened by the blowing and scutching machinery. By passing through the mechanical process, the cotton fibers become elastic.

A bow-like tool called ‘menuchi-yumi’ was used to loosen the texture of the cotton fibers by the means of a vibrating string before the mechanization of cotton production.
