It is a zabuton designed for a gift in celebration of kanreki, which comes in red. There is the custom of celebrating kanreki(someone’s 60th birthday), because the 10 elements and the 12 signs of the Chinese zodiac form a 60-year cycle and Kanreki marks the completion of the honoree’s 60-year cycle around the Chinese zodiac, which begins all over again in their 61st year.

The honoree is supposed to wear red garments such as a haori or a sleeveless vest and a bouffant cap, and sit on a red zabuton in celebration of kanreki.
