In the process of manufacturing a futon, a thick cotton batting is formed by overlapping multiple layers of cotton sheets by hand work, however, the thickness of the batting hardly becomes even because of hand work, so small pieces of square cotton sheets are partially put on the batting so that it can get uniformly flat, and the small square cotton sheets are called kabuse-wata.
